An elderly Barataria couple were assaulted and robbed of cash, cellphones, personal documents and their vehicle after picking up two men who requested a ride to Santa Cruz on Wednesday night.

Police said the 64-year-old self-employed draughtsman was driving east along Second Street, San Juan, with his 58-year-old wife, a preschool teacher, in the front passenger seat about 9.50 p.m. when they stopped at the corner of Saddle Road and Second Street and picked up two men who asked to be taken to Santa Cruz.

According to investi­gators, about 10.10 p.m., after reaching Capriata Road, La Pastora Road, one of the men announced a robbery and threatened to shoot the couple if they did not comply.
