No salvager for MV Barima 26 days after tender

(Kaieteur News) – Twenty-five days have passed since the deadline for Expressions of Interest to salvage the MV Barima, yet Government has still not disclosed which company or companies will undertake the recovery of the vessel.

Opposition MP Ganesh Mahipaul has condemned the delay as “wickedness” and “an insult” to the Guyanese people, particularly the families of the more than 100 people who lost their lives in what he described as the country’s largest tragedy in modern times.

At a recent news conference President Ali told reporters that the Expression of Interest (EOI) period had closed and that several companies were being shortlisted before being invited to submit prices for the recovery operation. “I think…the expression of interest would have closed. They have received a number of expressions of interest,” Ali said. “Those interests are being shortlisted now by the agency, and then those shortlisted entities will be invited to supply prices to have the vessel salvaged.”
