Government limits special operations to UNC districts

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says her Government will restrict the use of Special Operations to United National Congress-controlled constituencies, local government districts and Tobago.

Her decision comes in the face of objection and threats of protest action from People’s National Movement (PNM) MPs over the Special Operations legislation which is also to be implemented in PNM constituencies.

Persad-Bissessar said yesterday that the PNM-represented constituencies clearly preferred to be controlled by violent criminal gangs and the local drug mafia instead of being protected by law enforcement.
