GPL blames grass fire for blackout in parts of Corentyne

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) on Thursday blamed a grass fire for a prolonged power outage that affected customers between Number 54 Village and Number 68 Village, Berbice.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page, GPL apologised to affected customers and said the outage was caused by the tripping of its L22 Transmission Line, which links the Canefield and Number 53 Village substations.

According to GPL, the transmission line tripped after a grass fire in the vicinity of the transmission line infrastructure compromised one of the supporting structures. The company said its technical teams were on the ground carrying out emergency repairs, including the removal and replacement of the burnt structure and the transfer of the required transmission line hardware.
