DAMAGES in the amount of $510,000 has been awarded to a Freeport woman who was denied a Disability Assistance Grant after being stranded abroad during the Covid-19 border closures.
While Justice Christopher Sieuchand ruled in the woman's favour on Thursday, the awarded sum will now have to go to her family given that she died last month.
The judge found that the State had breached the constitutional right of Kamal Seunarine, 57, to the protection of the law by rigidly applying residency rules under the Public Assistance Act to reject her application.
