‘Wealthy drug mafia’ targeted

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has put what she described as the country’s wealthy drug mafia on notice, promising to go after “filthy, greedy” gangs operating out of Westmoorings, St Clair and Federation Park who she says are flooding Trinidad and Tobago with illegal drugs and guns.

She has also warned criminals, their supporters and their families that the end of the state of emergency (SoE) on September 17 will not bring an end to Government’s aggressive crime fight.

In a social media statement yesterday, Persad-Bissessar disclosed what she said was classified data provided to the National Security Council by law enforcement, showing that 5,802 people were arrested and 3,552, or 61.2%, were charged during the “highly successful” six-month SoE period.
