The Caribbean is mourning the death of legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, better known as the Mighty Sparrow, who died in New York on Sunday, September 27, at the age of 91.
His family confirmed that Sparrow died peacefully following a brief illness, surrounded by loved ones. Trinidad and Tobago’s national broadcaster TTT News and the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian both reported his death on Sunday.
Sparrow, born in Grand Roy, Grenada, on July 9, 1935, was raised in Trinidad and Tobago from the age of two. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he became one of the most influential voices in calypso and one of the Caribbean’s best-known cultural ambassadors.
