Death of King of Calypso-A prayerful stillness has fallen over the Caribbean – leaders

Slinger Francisco also known as the Mighty Sparrow has passed at the age of 91. The legendary singer who gave us “Jean and Dinah,” “Congo Man,” “Mr Walker,” “Ten to One Is Murder,” and a treasury of unforgettable hits no longer rises in song. Following the news of his death, President Irfaan Ali expressed deep condolences to the family, friends and fans of the calypso legend.

“The Mighty Sparrow’s music will endure as it has for decades. His compositions-insightful, witty, and at times mischievous-became the soundtrack of generations, their lyrics etched with wit, rhythm, and fearless social commentary-mirrors held up to the Caribbean’s character, its contradictions, its unbroken spirit.”

He added that the legend brought recognition to Caribbean civilisation through the means of his melodies and lyrics, which sailed far beyond the region’s shores.
