Calypso titan Mighty Sparrow dies at 91

(Kaieteur News) – Trinidad and Tobago and the global Caribbean diaspora are in mourning following the loss of one of the region’s most formidable cultural titans. Slinger Francisco, the internationally acclaimed performer revered across generations as the “Calypso King of the World” and known universally as The Mighty Sparrow, died peacefully on Sunday, 27th September, 2026, at a hospital in New York. He was 91 years old.

In an official public announcement, his daughter Karen Francisco, shared that the legendary musician succumbed to a brief illness while surrounded by his immediate family and loved ones in his final moments.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as ‘The Mighty Sparrow’,” Karen Francisco stated. “He was an institution in the entertainment industry, well admired for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter and mentor; beloved by many. He was also a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.”
