Trinidad and Tobago men's football team interim coach Derek King got down to business today (March 9), as he held his first training stint with his charges at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella. King was appointed interim coach on March 6, a day after the TT Football Association (TTFA) confirmed the departure of former coach Dwight Yorke.
The TT men's team is gearing up for a relatively busy period to end the month, as they will play away to Bolivia in a friendly on March 15, before facing the pair of Venezuela and Gabon in the Fifa Series on March 27 and 30, respectively. There was a familiar figure in the scorching Marabella heat for today's session in the form of newly-appointed assistant coach Hutson "Baba" Charles. The pair of Charles and King have worked together previously at the national level, with the latter having served as an assistant to Charles for the men's team over a decade ago. With the roles now reversed, King and Charles will be hoping to grind out favourable results on a road trip, which starts with the tricky match away to Bolivia, who are still in the hunt for a Fifa 2026 World Cup spot.
Bolivia will face Suriname in an intercontinental playoff on March 26, with the winner of that match set to face Iraq for a place at the World Cup.
Among the players aiming for selection at today's session were brothers Alvin and Joevin Jones, defenders Darnell Hospedales and Josiah Trimmingham, and goalkeeper Jabari Brice. National youth players such as Jaydon Caprietta and Adasa Richardson were also in the session, along with playmaker Daniel David, flankers Tyrese Bailey and Jaheim Faustin, and TT men's under-20 team captain Derrel Garcia.
TT's team for the Bolivia friendly could be announced as early as tomorrow (March 10). Intriguingly, the Bolivia friendly falls outside the Fifa match window, which runs from March 23-31. With that being said, expect to see a couple of new faces in the senior team line-up.
