Call him the interim manager no more. On Saturday, during an interview with I95.5 FM, TT Football Association (TTFA) president Kieron Edwards confirmed that Derek King will be promoted from interim status to head coach of the country's men's football team.
King was appointed on an interim basis by the TTFA in early March, after the Edwards-led administration mutually terminated former coach Dwight Yorke's contract on February 28. In the interim role up to this point, King has had three matches with the Trinidad and Tobago team and is still awaiting his first win. A largely locally-based squad lost 3-0 to Bolivia in a friendly on March 15, with a 4-1 loss following against another South American opponent in Venezuela in the Fifa Series on March 27. Also in the Fifa Series, TT lost to Gabon on penalties after the teams played to a gripping 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Just over a month after the team's Fifa Series exercise, Edwards has now confirmed that King's upgrade to head coach has already been ratified by the board, with the former Joe Public and North East Stars coach set to be given a year-long contract in the first instance. Edwards said the composition of King's backroom staff is still to be rectified.
Next on the agenda for King and his charges will be a June 9 friendly with Russia at the Kaliningrad Stadium, Oktyabrsky Island, Russia, while the team is also expected to play a friendly against South Korea, as per the TTFA president.
