As she recalled the pain of losing two siblings to separate vehicular accidents, President Christine Kangaloo yesterday pleaded with the Government for enhanced road safety measures, given the decision to scrap the Demerits Points System.
Kangaloo made the appeal while delivering an address at the ceremonial opening of the First Session of the 13th Parliament, at the Red House, Port of Spain. Sitting among her audience were Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and members of the new government.
The President broached the issue with “apologies” as she turned to “an area of suggested parliamentary action that is deeply personal”.
