For many men, some of the hardest words to say are simply, “I need help.” But the numbers suggest that silence can have devastating consequences.
As September marks Suicide Prevention Month, the focus is on encouraging men and boys to break the silence, while families and communities are being urged to create safe spaces where those who are struggling feel able to speak up and seek support.
The gender divide in recorded suicide deaths in Trinidad and Tobago is stark: nearly five men for every one woman. According to MindWise data, of the 700 suicide deaths recorded between 2020 and 2026, approximately 83% were males and 17% were females.
