Scientists have confirmed heightened underground activity at the Piparo Mud Volcano following a significant event recorded on December 24, 2025, raising renewed concerns about risks to surrounding communities.
In an update issued by researchers Kerneese Ramjarrie, Prof. Oshaine Blake, Dr. Lorraine Sobers, Dr. Kailas Banerjee, Dr. Dexter Davis, and Dr. Ryan Ramsook, the team reported that the volcano remains highly active, with evidence of increasing underground pressure, gas release, and ground deformation.
Piparo is one of the most active of Trinidad and Tobago’s 32 mud volcanoes and is remembered for its devastating 1997 eruption, which damaged homes and displaced families. Researchers say the latest activity confirms that the underground system remains dynamic and potentially dangerous.
