Govt. tells farmers to prepare and not panic

(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Agriculture is urging farmers to brace for the potential effects of El Niño conditions, while assuring that measures are being put in place to protect agricultural production and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha delivered the assurance on Monday during an El Niño Preparedness Forum hosted by the ministry in collaboration with the Hydrometeorological Service at the Author Chung Conference Centre. According to a Department of Public Information release, Minister Mustapha stressed that the forum was not intended to alarm farmers, but to ensure they are equipped with the information, resources and strategies needed to navigate potentially prolonged dry conditions.

“We are here today not to create panic. We are here to prepare,” the minister said, urging farmers to remain confident and continue contributing to the country’s food production. According to Mustapha, the Hydrometeorological Service has indicated that the conditions currently being experienced could persist for the remainder of 2026, with a strong possibility of extending into the first quarter of 2027.
