3 drivers face $105,000 fines, $100,000 bail over traffic offences

Three Essequibo Coast men were brought before the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court earlier this month on various traffic-related charges arising from separate incidents. Prakash Kissoon, 25, a self-employed man of Cottonfield, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) was charged with dangerous driving, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving an unlicensed motor vehicle. The charges stemmed from an incident on September 11, on the Richmond Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Kissoon appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir on September 16, where the charges were read to him.

He pleaded not guilty to the dangerous driving charge but guilty to driving an uninsured motor vehicle. He was granted $50,000 bail on the dangerous driving charge and fined $30,000 for driving an uninsured motor vehicle. For driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, Kissoon was fined $10,000, with an alternative of two weeks’ imprisonment. The matter was adjourned to October 14, 2026, for disclosure of statements. Also appearing before the court was Devonte Person, 20, a construction worker of Richmond Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast. Person was charged with dangerous driving and driving an uninsured motor vehicle, offences which allegedly occurred on September 11 on the Richmond Public Road. When the charges were read to him on September 16, Person pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving and guilty to driving an uninsured motor vehicle. He was granted $50,000 bail on the dangerous driving charge and fined $30,000 for driving an uninsured motor vehicle. His matter was also adjourned to October 14 for disclosure of statements. Meanwhile, Abdool Omar Saleem, 38, an operator of Pomona Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, was charged with five traffic offences stemming from an incident on September 7 on the Pomona Access Road. The charges were driving an unlicensed vehicle, breach of insurance, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, and failing to display the required identification marks at the front and rear of the vehicle. Saleem appeared before Magistrate Mohabir on September 11 and pleaded guilty to all five charges.

He was fined $30,000, with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment, for driving an unlicensed vehicle.
