IN DEFENCE of the Government's proposed stand-your-ground legislation, former attorney general Anand Ramlogan has urged those opposed to it to return their United States travel visas.
Speaking at Fyzabad's public consultation on Friday night for the proposed legislation which aims to give homeowners the right to respond with force to criminals invading their homes and private spaces, Ramlogan cited US legislation- particularly in the state of Florida, which gives the benefit of the doubt to a person who claims self-defence.
United States law, where self-defence statutes remove the legal requirement to retreat when faced with a threat, were previously cited by the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar shortly after coming into office. Such laws were a promise on which the United National Congress (UNC) campaigned prior to the April 28 general election amid a surge of violent crime.
