InÂdia’s ExÂterÂnal AfÂfairs MinÂisÂter Dr SubÂrahÂmanyam JaisÂhankar is exÂpectÂed to arÂrive in T&T next week as part of a wider Caribbean tour aimed at strengthÂenÂing diploÂmatÂic and ecoÂnomÂic ties with the reÂgion.
In a stateÂment, InÂdia’s MinÂistry of ExÂterÂnal AfÂfairs said JaisÂhankar’s visÂit, schedÂuled beÂtween May 2 and May 10, will inÂclude stops in JaÂmaica, SuriÂname and Trinidad and ToÂbaÂgo, where he is exÂpectÂed to enÂgage with seÂnior govÂernÂment ofÂfiÂcials on biÂlatÂerÂal and mulÂtiÂlatÂerÂal isÂsues. The minÂistry said the visÂit is part of onÂgoÂing efÂforts to deepÂen coÂopÂerÂaÂtion with counÂtries that share longÂstandÂing hisÂtorÂiÂcal links with InÂdia, parÂticÂuÂlarÂly those with large InÂdo-Caribbean popÂuÂlaÂtions deÂscendÂed from inÂdenÂtured labourÂers, ofÂten reÂferred to as GirÂmiÂtiya comÂmuÂniÂties.
JaisÂhankar is exÂpectÂed to hold disÂcusÂsions with loÂcal leadÂerÂship on arÂeas inÂcludÂing trade, inÂvestÂment, deÂvelÂopÂment coÂopÂerÂaÂtion and globÂal isÂsues of muÂtuÂal inÂterÂest.
