REPORT BRIBE TAKERS

MINISTER of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen has called on the public to report corrupt building and public health inspectors who take bribes, saying some are living lavish lifestyles, including owning mansions and driving luxury vehicles, which their public service salaries cannot support.

Ameen raised the issue during her contribution to debate on the Public Health (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill, 2026 in the Senate yesterday.

She said she had spoken to a former local government minister about some of the concerns affecting the system, including shortages of building inspectors and public health inspectors. Ameen said the former minister shared the view that the shortages existed because the previous government failed to fill vacancies, creating opportunities for people to take advantage of the system.
