Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has defended the reduction in State sponsorship for Divali Nagar celebrations, accusing the People’s National Movement (PNM) of hypocrisy over its criticism of the decision.
Responding to Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales, who condemned the withdrawal of sponsorship by State enterprises from the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC), Persad-Bissessar yesterday said funding reductions had also affected several other religious, cultural and national celebrations.
“It’s only fair that Divali sponsorships by the State are also reduced. Previously, State companies cut funding for steelbands, fetes, tassa, Carnival events, Baptist day, Independence and Emancipation events,” she said.
