THE Court of Appeal has overturned the 2022 conviction and death sentence of a St Joseph man for the 2006 murder of chartered accountant Paul Roopsingh, ordering that he face a retrial almost 19 years after the killing.
The appeal, brought by Kendell Gomez, was heard yesterday before Justices Gillian Lucky, Carla Brown-Antoine and Eleanor Donaldson-Honeywell at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain.
Gomez, who has now been incarcerated for about 18 years and eight months, was represented by senior counsel Hasine Shaikh, head of the Public Defenders’ Department, along with attorney Shaun Morris. Attorney Wayne Rajbansie appeared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
