ARRIVE Alive president Sharon Inglefield has commended the Government on its effort to address road safety, including the enactment of the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund for uninsured victims.
Inglefield has been lobbying for this fund to be operationalised, saying it held over $1 billion but no victims had ever been compensated. The fund, approved by Cabinet in 2015, was expected to be implemented later that year, with a start-up investment of $20 million.
Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo, in his budget presentation on Monday, stated the fund will be operationalised. He also announced an increase in traffic fines for dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and driving while disqualified as a deterrent to the high road traffic carnage.
