Opposition leader takes alleged state harassment to UN, CARICOM, U.S. diplomats

(Kaieteur News) – The office of the leader of the opposition has formally dispatched a diplomatic briefing note to international bodies and foreign missions, sounding the alarm over an alleged campaign of state-backed harassment, unlawful detentions, and warrantless searches targeting him and his party.

The document, dated 5th September, 2026, was transmitted directly to the UN Secretary-General, the CARICOM Secretary-General, the OAS Secretary-General, the United States Ambassador, the British High Commissioner, the Canadian High Commissioner, and the Carter Center. The brief calls for immediate international scrutiny regarding what it characterises as escalating threats to political freedoms, due process, and the rule of law under the current administration.

Central to the document is a detailed timeline of events from 3rd September, 2026, when Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and members of his staff were detained by the Guyana Police Force at approximately 7:15 p.m. Though Mohamed was initially released on his own recognisance later that evening, he, along with Members of Parliament Dr. Gordon Barker and Dr. Andre Lewis, and Regional Councillor Sean Nelson, were subsequently re-detained at the Leonora Police Station over allegations surrounding their movement near the president’s residence.
