Social commentator GHK Lall has launched a blistering challenge to the credibility of Guyana’s official inflation figures, arguing that the statistics presented by the country’s authorities bear little resemblance to the financial hardships confronting ordinary citizens.
In a sharply worded opinion piece published in Village Voice News on Friday, October 30, Lall questioned how the Bank of Guyana and the Bureau of Statistics could report relatively modest inflation levels while consumers continue to face rising prices for food, transportation, construction materials and other basic necessities.
He argued that the official figures are increasingly disconnected from the everyday experiences of Guyanese who must contend with the cost of feeding their families and meeting household expenses.
