(Kaieteur News) – Guyanese economist Ramesh Gampat has warned that Guyana’s inflation rate may be understated, pointing to soaring food prices, rents and building materials that continue to squeeze household budgets.
In a research paper published by the Guyana Business Journal (GBJ), Gampat formerly of the United Nations Development Programme, and co-author with Minakshi Mahabir of Guyana’s Human Capital Paradox: Investing More, Returning Less (2026), conducted a review of the country’s oil economy.
According to the Economist, “Official inflation figures should be treated with caution. Guyana’s measured inflation rate is heavily contested, and anecdotal evidence on food, rents, building materials and services suggests it is most likely underestimated.”
