(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali and United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Wednesday signed a Joint Declaration for an Enhanced Defence Partnership at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., committing both countries to closer military cooperation and joint action against drug trafficking and other security threats.
According to a government release, the declaration provides for sustained defence expertise, specialised training and joint military exercises involving the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the United States military. It also sets out plans to strengthen Guyana’s ability to monitor its airspace and respond to threats within and around its borders.
The agreement comes as Guyana and the United States seek closer cooperation against narco-terrorist organisations and drug trafficking networks operating across the hemisphere, the release stated.
