Forward Guyana Movement leader and lone parliamentarian Amanza Walton has called on the Government to disclose the commitments made under Guyana’s enhanced defence partnership with the United States, arguing that a broad public statement is insufficient to ensure accountability on an agreement with potentially significant implications for national security and sovereignty.
Walton said there was a clear strategic rationale for strengthening defence cooperation with Washington, particularly given Guyana’s offshore oil and gas resources and substantial American investment in the energy sector. However, she insisted that the public and Parliament must be given a meaningful explanation of what has been agreed to in their name.
“The Government has released a public statement on the Joint Declaration for an Enhanced Defence Partnership, but a broad and vague outline will not suffice,” Walton said in a statement.
