Tobago could get two seats on the Independent benches of the Senate under a major constitutional reform proposed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
In a move that could reshape the composition of the Upper House, Persad-Bissessar announced yesterday that her Government intends to introduce legislation requiring the President to appoint at least two Tobagonians among the nine Independent senators.
The proposal would give Tobago constitutionally guaranteed representation in both Houses of Parliament for the first time, adding two Senate seats to the island’s existing two guaranteed seats in the House of Representatives.
