Police have issued 4,795 tickets to motorists for driving without valid insurance so far this year, representing potential fines of $47.95 million if the maximum penalty of $10,000 is imposed in each case.
The figures were disclosed yesterday during the weekly Police Service news conference at the Police Administration Building, Port of Spain. Representing the TTPS were Acting Superintendent Kevin Martin of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, Acting Inspector Jesse Jitmohan and Police Road Safety Co-ordinator Sergeant Brent Batson.

Batson cautioned, however, that the $47.95 million represents only the potential value of the fines and does not mean that amount will necessarily be collected, as some motorists may choose to challenge the tickets in court.
