Former minister and former parliamentarian Annette Ferguson has called for an independent investigation into the death of 32-year-old Gavin Kennard Douglas, warning that the circumstances surrounding his fatal injuries in police custody demand more than government assurances.
In a letter published in Village Voice News on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Ferguson questioned how Douglas sustained a fatal brain haemorrhage while detained at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station on Saturday, October 31, and demanded a transparent account of what transpired inside the station.

Her intervention follows a post-mortem examination conducted on November 2 by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, which determined that Douglas died from a brain haemorrhage caused by blunt trauma. Two Taser studs were also removed from his body and lodged as exhibits.
