The death of 32-year-old Gavin Kennard Douglas while in police custody has prompted serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his detention, his medical emergency and the events leading to his death at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
Reports circulating about the incident have raised concerns about the treatment Douglas allegedly received at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, including claims that he was restrained, subjected to Taser shocks and had water thrown on him. There are also reports alleging that he was beaten while unclothed.
These accounts have not been independently verified, and no official finding has established that such actions occurred. Nevertheless, the allegations warrant examination as part of a transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death.
