Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has accused the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) of dishonesty for failing to disclose that it applied for and will receive half a million dollars in Government funding for this year’s Divali Nagar celebrations while simultaneously seeking financial support from multiple State enterprises.
Declaring that she intends to put an end to what she described as dishonest “swine behaviour”, Persad-Bissessar yesterday accused non-governmental organisations (NGOs), sporting and cultural bodies of exploiting a loophole that allows them to secure funding from several State agencies for the same event without disclosing the other sources of support.
“I won’t call it a scheme, I would call it a type of swine behaviour that should be stopped and I will stop it,” the Prime Minister said in response to questions about a statement issued by the NCIC yesterday which indicated that it had never accused her of political victimisation by withholding State funding for the Divali Nagar.
