Political commentator GHK Lall has challenged Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo’s sudden appeal for cooperation between the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), questioning whether the call for national unity is also a calculated response to shifting political fortunes.
In two sharply worded opinion pieces, “Bharrat Jagdeo at Robert Corbin’s Gathering” and “Jagdeo’s Corbin Funeral Symphony – Pt II,” Lall dissected Jagdeo’s remarks at the October 14 evening of reflection for former PNC leader Robert Corbin, arguing that the vice-president’s warning about the possible extinction of both parties was far more politically significant than a routine tribute.
Jagdeo told the gathering at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre that the two historically dominant political forces would have to find a way to work together if Guyana were to overcome decades of division.
