(Kaieteur News) – A recent proposal by People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) General Secretary and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo calling for political cooperation between his party and the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has been met with skepticism by Opposition Member of Parliament Terrence Campbell, who characterised the overture as a strategy for political survival rather than a genuine move toward shared governance.
Addressing Jagdeo’s remarks that the future of Guyana would involve the two major parties working together “at some level and in some fashion,” Campbell argued that the call offers no institutional framework, lacks foundation in political trust, and fails to offer credible commitments to power-sharing.
Reflecting on governance over the past year, Campbell pointed out that the PPP/C administration has consistently engaged in unilateral decision-making that undermines its own claims of seeking inclusivity. He noted that vast sums of oil revenues are currently being spent without national consensus on economic stabilisation or intergenerational savings, while the Opposition and trade unions were completely excluded from consultations on the national Budget. Furthermore, Campbell highlighted the engineered removal of Yonette Cummings-Edwards as Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, the launch of the Guyana Development Bank without Opposition representation on its board, and the government’s refusal to allow parliamentary debate on the MV Barima tragedy as clear evidence that executive power remains tightly centralised.
