The VatĀiĀcan apĀpeals triĀbunal deĀclared a misĀtriĀal TuesĀday in the Holy Seeās big ātriĀal of the cenĀtuĀry,ā a stunĀning blow to both Pope FranĀcisā legaĀcy and VatĀiĀcan prosĀeĀcuĀtors who had put a carĀdiĀnal and sevĀerĀal othĀer peoĀple on triĀal over alĀleged fiĀnanĀcial crimes.
In a 16-page rulĀing, the apĀpeals court ruled that FranĀcis and VatĀiĀcan prosĀeĀcuĀtors both made proĀceĀdurĀal erĀrors that nulĀliĀfied the origĀiĀnal inĀdictĀment against CarĀdiĀnal AnĀgeĀlo BecĀciu and the othĀers and reĀquired a new triĀal. The court set a June 22 as the date for the new triĀal to beĀgin.
DeĀfense lawyers said such a rulĀing was sigĀnifĀiĀcant if not hisĀtoric, since it amountĀed to a VatĀiĀcan court deĀclarĀing that an act of the pope had no efĀfect.
