Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has described the death of Sir Charles Emile Straker as a “national loss”, paying tribute to the legendary musician whose voice and songwriting helped define Barbados’ cultural identity for more than six decades.
In a statement issued Friday, Mottley hailed Sir Emile as one of Barbados’ most beloved cultural icons and credited him with helping to tell the island’s story through music as co-founder, lead singer and creative force behind the internationally acclaimed Merrymen.
“His voice, songwriting, musicianship, and generosity of spirit helped tell Barbados’ story to the world,” the Prime Minister said.
