3 Million People by 2030: Ali’s Projection Sparks Questions About Guyana’s Future

President Irfaan Ali’s projection that at least three million people could be passing through Guyana’s economy annually by 2030 has exposed a question the Government’s migration policy must answer before the numbers become reality: can Guyana’s institutions and public services absorb the scale of movement that the President himself is anticipating?
Ali disclosed on September 26 that the Government is developing a new migration policy to supply labour for Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy, particularly construction and the industries expected to emerge from the country’s natural-gas development.
“I see an economy by 2030 where at least three million people will be passing through this economy…And that by itself creates its own demand,” Ali said.
