(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond on Friday revealed that an official investigation has commenced into allegations of rape and threatening behaviour against Deputy Commissioner of Police Fazil Karimbaksh, head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
The allegations were made by a serving female police inspector. They reportedly include multiple incidents of sexual assault, threats to her life and an alleged incident in which a firearm was pointed at her.
The development follows several days of calls from political parties and civil society groups for Karimbaksh to be removed from operational duties and placed on administrative leave while an independent investigation is conducted.
