PEOPLE detained under preventive detention orders (PDOs) who cannot afford private attorneys are facing difficulties securing legal representation to challenge their continued detention, according to a lawyer representing one of those in custody.

In a pre-action protocol letter dated August 14 to Attorney General John Jeremie, Review Tribunal chairman David Alexander and Legal Aid and Advisory Authority chairman Renuka Rambhajan, attorney Keron Ramkhalwhan said his client, Jamaalee Wilson, has been detained at the Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre under a PDO issued by the Minister of Homeland Security since July 18.

Ramkhalwhan said Wilson, 20, has been unable to obtain legal representation before the Review Tribunal and warned that unless the matter is addressed, he intends to pursue judicial review and constitutional proceedings.
