Leaking classrooms, no furniture greet hinterland children

(Kaieteur News) – As a new school year begins, Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, has raised concerns about inadequate furniture, leaking classrooms and insufficient classroom space at several schools, particularly in Guyana’s interior regions.

In a series of social media posts on the reopening of schools, Mohamed called on the Ministry of Education and regional authorities to urgently address the issues, while also issuing a broader message urging students, teachers and parents to work together to create a safe school environment.

Among the concerns highlighted was the situation at the North West Secondary School in Region One, where he stated that some students return to no furniture and some classrooms were experiencing leaks – adding that some parents took their child back home. “Students are returning to school without the basic furniture. The situation has become so bad that one parent took his son back home rather than leave him in these conditions. The school is also experiencing leaks, adding another concern for students and teachers who are expected to work and learn in a safe and suitable environment,” the post said.
