The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago (LATT) has expressed concern over statements made by the Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro following the police shooting that killed 31-year-old Joshua Samaroo and hospitalized his common-law wife, Kaia Sealy.
The Association released a statement today following Guevarro’s prior remarks, that he had found no basis to suspend or place any of the officers involved in the shooting on administrative leave, adding that he had recommended counselling for them.
Last Tuesday Samaroo was killed during an encounter with police officers in Valsayn. CCTV footage captured his vehicle coming to an abrupt halt into Bassie Street Extension, off Dookiesingh Street. Police, following close behind, fired several shots at Samaroo and his vehicle, even after Samaroo appeared to lower his window and place both of his hands outside in surrender. Express analysis of the footage counted 19 shots fired by police officers at the vehicle.
