The home invasion law is now in effect in Trinidad and Tobago, allowing citizens to use deadly force to defend themselves against criminals who unlawfully enter their homes.
President Christine Kangaloo has assented to two pieces of legislation—the Home Invasion (Self-Defence and Defence of Property) Act, 2025; and the Summary Offences (Amendment) Act, 2025, which addresses the regulation of fireworks.
Penalties for home invasion are typically a $500,000 fine and up to 20 years’ imprisonment; with higher penalties ($750,000 and up to 25 years) when aggravating factors like gang involvement or the presence of vulnerable persons are present.
