Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says her Government intends to honour the commitments it made to trade unions that supported the United National Congress (UNC) in the last general election, while insisting that even unions which did not support the party have benefited under her administration.
Her comments come a day after trade unions and workers took to the streets, calling on the Government to honour its promises to the labour movement and raising concerns about its handling of industrial relations.
Asked whether negotiations would continue with unions that participated in the demonstration, and whether the Government regarded some unions as allies and others as hostile stakeholders, Persad-Bissessar maintained that her administration had already delivered benefits to unions regardless of their political affiliations.
