Trinidad and Tobago’s decision to vote against a United Nations resolution calling for an end to the United States embargo on Cuba was not a vote against the Cuban people, but rather a vote in support of their right to democracy, freedom and self-determination.
Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs Sean Sobers, in a statement in the Parliament yesterday, defended the Government’s decision to break with its long-standing position on the annual resolution and insisted Trinidad and Tobago would not support the diplomatic initiatives of a dictatorship.
“Our vote was not against the Cuban people. Our vote rather was for the Cuban people,” Sobers said.
