A 76-year-old contractor was crushed to death on Thursday by a reversing lorry at an industrial site in Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The deceased has been identified as Gobin Persaud from Dasrath Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to reports, Persaud was in the compound when he reportedly walked behind motor lorry GPP 6272, which was reversing at the time. The lorry reportedly struck Persaud, causing him to fall, after which its rear wheels ran over him. An alarm was raised, and the lorry came to a halt. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were subsequently summoned and pronounced Persaud dead at the scene. The body was escorted to a funeral home awaiting a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old lorry driver from Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was taken into custody as investigations continue.
