As of June 2026, a total of approximately 33,274 pensioners have benefitted from the Government’s $30,000 electricity subsidy through Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL), while as of March 2026, 36,586 pensioners benefitted from the water subsidy programme through the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI). Human Services and Social Security Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud recently reminded pensioners that the electricity subsidy is applied directly to their GPL accounts once registered in their names. Eligible pensioners should see the $30,000 credit reflected on their GPL bills commencing June 2026. Persons who qualify but do not see the credit reflected are encouraged to visit the nearest GPL office for assistance. The Minister also urged pensioners to review their water bills to ensure they are receiving the applicable subsidy through GWI. According to a Department of Public Information (DPI) report, the electricity and water subsidies is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life of senior citizens and easing the cost of living for pensioners throughout Guyana.
