Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged leak of confidential information related to a sexual assault complaint, following public concern raised by the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said the probe will focus on determining how the complainant’s name, image, and statement details were made public, and will seek to identify and hold accountable anyone responsible for violating the law or TTPS protocols.
In a statement on Friday, the TTPS stressed that strict confidentiality laws, including provisions in the Sexual Offences Act, exist to protect the privacy and dignity of victims and encourage reporting of sexual crimes.
