A police officer and a civilian were injured in a shooting on Upper Fairley Street, Tunapuna, on Monday evening, as law enforcement returned fire at an armed assailant who opened fire on them.
Around 7:45 p.m., PC Phillip, 29, was walking with fellow officers, including PC Laban and PC Elder, after attending a report of assault by beating, when they were targeted by a man armed with an automatic weapon. The suspect, described as approximately five feet eight inches tall, brown in complexion, wearing black clothing and a brown balaclava, fired multiple shots at the officers before fleeing north along the street.
PC Phillip sustained gunshot injuries to his right leg, while 25-year-old Andel Smith of Upper Fairley Street was shot in his right arm.
