Members of the Frano Fitness Community gathered at the Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston for their long-awaited sports day, where wellness, friendly competition and community spirit took centre stage. Held on July 4, three houses converged on one field with hopes of elevating their scores in their favour. For the main organiser, Rohan ‘Frano’ Francis, it was important to host an event that brought his community together in a fit yet fun way.“I wanted to create an event that combined fitness, teamwork, and entertainment while giving our members something exciting to look forward to outside of the gym. And having a sports day does just that, and so much more,” Francis, who also owns the Frano Fitness Training Studio, told Lifestyle. This year marked the second staging, and Francis explained that the summer is the perfect time for people to become more active and enjoy fun outdoor experiences.“The competition started long before sports day. Teams trained together, encouraged one another, and built excitement through workouts and friendly rivalries. It strengthened relationships while motivating everyone to stay active, committed, and ready to represent their house,” he revealed.Similar to last year, the heart of the event remained the same: bringing people together through friendly competition and community. However, this time around, the business owner shared that the execution was more grand and the game-day experience more organised.“Participation increased as more people realised the event is really about team building. We also had better-structured competitions, stronger team spirit, improved sponsorship support, and an even larger turnout,” he added. Before the competition, members of the Red Dragons, Blue Blazers and Golden Lions were carefully assigned through a Google Form ahead of the big showdown. This ensured that each house had a balanced mix of fitness levels, personalities and experience, helping to level the playing field.“We intentionally designed events that required speed, strength, teamwork, coordination, strategy, and participation rather than elite athletic ability. We wanted everyone to feel included,” Francis said, adding, “The goal wasn’t just competition; it was creating new friendships and strengthening the Frano Fitness community.”Some of the day’s events included sprint races, relay races, tug-of-war, football penalty shootouts, cheerleading, fitness challenges, and team competitions.“The atmosphere was absolutely electric,” the personal trainer highlighted, noting that every house showed up ready to compete, cheer, and support each other. The officials and judges, who volunteered their expertise for the day, brought experience to the field and made integrity and fairness their top priority. “While all three teams gave their best, the winning house, Red Dragons, was crowned the overall champions because the team demonstrated incredible consistency, teamwork, and determination throughout the day. The Blue Blazers, who received a team spirit award for their outstanding energy and encouragement, finished second, while the Golden Lions placed third,” Francis declared.BUILDING RELATIONSHIPSFor the fitness expert, sports day builds relationships that go beyond the workout floor, which is why it was so important to host an annual event of this magnitude. “It encourages teamwork, healthy competition and accountability; and it instils confidence and leadership. It reminds people that fitness should be enjoyable and that lasting results come through consistency and community support.”Strong traditions like this one help strengthen a culture of wellness.“I want our members to have something they could proudly call their own every year. Sports Day represents unity, growth, and everything Frano Fitness stands for. Each year becomes another chapter in our community’s story,” he said. His vision is to make this sports day one of the island’s premier fitness community events. “It is my hope that this event inspires people to embrace healthy living, strengthen friendships, and show that fitness is about much more than exercise; it’s about building a community where everyone feels supported, challenged, and empowered to become the best version of themselves.”This is just one of the many wellness initiatives from Frano Fitness. The community seeks to provide nutrition education and fitness challenges, host charity events and participate in even larger community activities. “Our goal is to continue making a positive impact; not just inside the gym, but across Jamaica,” Francis noted.krysta.anderson@gleanerjm.com
