The United National Congress mourns the passing of one of the greatest icons of our nation, the legendary Mighty Sparrow, whose extraordinary life and musical genius helped to define who we are as a people.
Born Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow was far more than a calypsonian. He was a national institution, a cultural ambassador, a fearless social commentator and one of the most influential voices ever to emerge from the Caribbean.
For generations, Sparrow entertained us, challenged us, provoked us, educated us and, many times, made us laugh at ourselves. Through calypso, he captured the character, contradictions, aspirations and struggles of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. His songs became part of our collective memory and his voice became inseparable from the story of our nation.
